Geo4Karao – Further Advances in Karao
In February 2025, three dedicated Hungarian men – geologist András Berecz and geophysicists János Stickel and István Kaszás – contributed their expertise and experience to support the Karao mission.
Currently, an Adventist Maasai primary school operates in Karao, where this year 250 children are learning to read, write, and do arithmetic in Swahili and English.
Since Karao is located in the Maasai plains, the school must also provide accommodation for staff and children travelling farther away. For this reason, two large buildings were constructed for the teachers, but unfortunately, time has taken its toll on them, requiring significant renovations this year. Additionally, a dormitory and a guesthouse have been opened, providing comfortable accommodation for volunteers from Europe or America during their service.
Last year, in just three weeks, a Hungarian team successfully established a large kitchen garden next to the guesthouse, planting local plants, trees, and shrubs for experimental purposes.
This year, István, András, and János not only restored the kitchen garden but also carried out significant surveys and technical work within a short period. To give an overview of their valuable professional contributions, here is a summary of their work:
• Inspection of the existing well using a well camera, reinstallation of the pump, its testing, and automation of its operation.
• Installation of drinking fountains for the children on the eastern wall of the kitchen.
• Removal of damaged toilet flush tanks and faucets, and installation of shower-head flushing systems.
• Replacement of rotary taps at the handwashing stations with push-taps.
• Installation of water meters and establishment of water access taps for the villagers.
• Data collection using GPS to plan the future surface water system.
• Drone imaging to assist in the planning of earthworks for water management.
• Geophysical profiling.
• Restoration of the sewage pit.
Their work was supported by various specialized tools, and companies also sponsored their travel.
We would like to express our gratitude to them and to everyone who contributed to this mission.
